I think there's a little flaw in the Android 2.3.x Gingerbread version, if you read the official documentation, it mentions that it can be installed on an HTC Desire only with the help of a custom recovery. This issue was resolved in the Android 2.3.3 firmware. Anyhow I'm glad I didn't buy the phone, because I can live without wireless internet connection because I like my troubles. But, as you have mentioned, you can use your phone to take phone calls on your computer.
This is the exciting and the best part of the procedure. If your phone is rooted and you have already got all the drivers installed into the /sdcard/Android/system/lib directory, then you can successfully install a ROM. This is very easy to do in my opinion. We just need to install the custom ROM into the SD card directory. To do that, just copy the official ROM zip file to the Android/SDcard/ directory. Rename the ROM by removing the.zip extension and copy it to the /system/lib/ directory. Now, restart your phone and wait for the installation to finish and it's not mandatory to have network access as we can do it through WIFI too.
You can flash any apps which is present in your phone, it is pretty much similar to installing apps in your smartphone. The only difference is in the size of the downloaded files. The size of the apk file is obviously larger in a custom ROM installation.
You can also download the files needed to make your device (or phone) work. However, if you fall into the same situation where your phone's OS is bricked or unresponsive, then you're better off reinstalling the default firmware. Do this by connecting your phone to you computer, following the instructions below to flash the device with ZFlash tool. The important thing here is that you have a custom recovery installed on your device. You can see all the instructions in the following.
One thing you should know is that this method of flashing an nand bootloader does entail a risk for the device. When booting into flash mode, you cannot access the fastboot or DFU applications installed on your phone via ZFlash. You will need to perform a downgrade back to stock. 7211a4ac4a
