If the macOS that you want isn't compatible with your Mac or the currently installed macOS, the installer will let you know, and the App Store might prevent you from downloading it. For example, it might dim the Get button, say that the macOS is not compatible with this device, or say that the requested version of macOS is not available.
Apple has released the final version of MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 to all Mac users. There are no major new features in macOS Mojave 10.14.6, but the latest MacOS Mojave version includes various bug fixes and is therefore recommended to all Mac uses who are running MacOS Mojave.
Users can also choose to download individual package installers and either use a combo update for MacOS or a standard update. The combo update allows a Mac to be updated from an earlier version of Mojave, for example to jump directly from 10.14.3 to 10.14.6, whereas the standard version must be installed on the preceding release.
You might try using the Combo Update package installer instead, which will update directly from 10.14.4 to 10.14.6. The Combo Update can be downloaded directly from Apple by following the links in the article or at the link below.
Download Note: If you already have Mojave installed in your mac and what to update to the latest version download "Update for Mojave 10.14 or later". If you can any previous version of macOS installed on your mac (Sierra, High Sierra or any other) click on "Update for any previous macOS" to download the appropriate file for you.
I have a secondhand iMAC that has just been updated to OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 (old, I know). I've attempted to install my Microsoft office from my subscription and am met with "This software requires macOS version 10.14.0 or later" which my iMAC wont support. Is there a way that I am able to install an older compatible version of Microsoft?

During my testing in the Catalina beta version I was able to download 10.15, 10.14.6, 10.14.5, and 10.13.6. I was not able to test if 10.13.6 would download the hardware specific build of 10.13.6 for the 2018 MacBook Pro, since I do not have that hardware.
I would assume that downloading an Installer application for a macOS version that is not supported on the hardware you are running the command on would fail. (Again I did not have such hardware available for testing.)
I then tried to download 10.14.1, and I get an error that I can not download this because my system needs to have 10.14.0. The install gives me this error, "This update requires Mac OS version 10.14".
