Playing orchestral instruments requires multiple playing styles and switching between these playing styles is paramount to achieving a realistic sound. Orchestral Tools have implemented an outstanding method of playing multiple articulations which is fully customizable to how you work.
Strings and brass being the meat and potatoes of most media composers' orchestral arrangements, one might have guessed Orchestral Tools' next major sampling project would be a brass collection. Confounding expectation, the company have instead turned the spotlight on a less favoured section of the orchestra, namely the woodwinds (they're the guys sitting in the middle, being drowned out by the brass, percussion and strings). Entitled Berlin Woodwinds, the new library has created quite a stir on forums: in fact, such is the level of online speculation that it's essential for it to go under the SOS microscope without delay.
Try as I might, I failed to find anything I disliked in this library. Or to put it another way, I like it a lot! My only criticism is the current omission of alto flute, bass clarinet and contrabassoon, all of which play an important role in traditional scores. Happily, Orchestral Tools have said they will release an expansion pack of 'additional special woodwinds', which will include the latter two instruments and an E-flat clarinet. That gives me hope that they might also consider adding esoteric items such as bass flute, contrabass clarinet or even a heckelphone (or bass oboe), at some point. None of them are essential, by any means, but it's nice to have such exotic timbres up your sleeve when composing. That said, the current instrumentation should keep composers fully occupied for some time!
All the instruments in Berlin Woodwinds can be found in one or other of Vienna Symphonic Library's Woodwinds I & II collections (total 86GB installed) along with extra ensembles, additional instruments and all the articulations you'll ever need, albeit at a significantly higher price if you splash out on both volumes' extended versions. A less costly alternative is Cinesamples' Cinewinds Core and Cinewinds Pro libraries (estimated total size 31GB), which collectively feature a complete set of orchestral solo woodwinds and a selection of ethnic and period winds (some of which play phrases), all recorded from five mic positions. However, the Cinewinds libraries lack played octave runs and their articulation menus are fairly restricted.
Offering 11 solo woodwinds, two woodwind ensembles, a comprehensive range of articulations and a full complement of octave runs and mini-phrases, Berlin Woodwinds is a leading contender in the new breed of woodwind libraries. Although it currently has a few gaps in its instrumentation, the library is thorough and logical in its presentation, and its instruments are among the most playable and expressive out there. Although beginners may regard it as too specialised or over-priced, its excellent performances and deep musicality represent a great investment for pro users.
This range of orchestral patches covers most of the standard instruments and articulations of a smaller, more intimate sounding orchestra. Designed for students and hobbyists, the original samples are part of the VSCO2 Community edition but have now been scripted for the full version of Kontakt to include legato, round robins and dynamics via the modwheel. Weighing in at just over a gigabyte in size, the samples cover strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion and even two pianos and a church organ. These are all available as separate patches but there are also clever multis which group the instruments into ensembles for easy chord, arpeggio and tutti playing. The bonus harp instrument is a heavenly addition to this fully-featured orchestral package.
Cinesamples is proud to present CineWinds CORE Library, a next-generation orchestral woodwinds library recorded in the legendary MGM Scoring Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, and mixed by master engineer Dennis Sands (The Avengers, The Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, American Beauty). This is the real Hollywood Woodwinds sound. The CineWinds CORE Library covers the essentials of the orchestral woodwinds section, and as always, we focus on simplicity and unparalleled recording quality. Each instrument has been meticulously sampled to cover the nuance and detail of these while maintaining ease of use for the composer. CineWinds CORE Library provides a strong foundation of expressive woodwinds for our composing templates.Enjoy this 1st volume in our CineWinds lineup of products, covering all the woodwind instruments in the orchestra including ethnic woodwinds.
This is what you mostly use as an orchestral composer anyways, so these all-in-one libraries are highly useful. Some of the full orchestral libraries have more articulations, and some less. Once you buy the section-specific libraries, you'll get more bespoke articulations for those sections, because the sample developers have spent a lot more time on that specific section.
Berlin-based company Orchestral Tools has something of a reputation for impressive sample libraries, especially within the orchestral realm. But as is the case with most good libraries, owning the fully featured sets can add up to a sizeable investment and having the option for something which is more modest, to suit more simplistic work, is really important.
Orchestral Tools and Berklee College of Music have collaborated to create a core orchestral library, Berlin Orchestra, that is accessible to students and emerging composers alike. The library features instruments from each section of the orchestra including woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings and solo strings. 2b1af7f3a8
