Dark Mode uses a dark colour scheme that works system-wide, including with the apps that come with your Mac. Apps from other developers can adopt it, too. If an app doesn't use a dark colour scheme when Dark Mode is turned on, it doesn't support Dark Mode, or it has its own settings for working with Dark Mode or controlling its colour scheme.
Apple also offers a feature called Dynamic Desktop that perfectly accompanies Auto mode. With this setting the backdrop to your screen will change throughout the day, so as the sun goes down, your wallpaper will get darker.
Staring at your Mac screen for too long in a dark room can be hard on your eyes. Instead of subjecting yourself to bright colors and blinding white menus, you can turn on dark mode. The feature has been available since the release of macOS Mojave in 2018, and just as you can turn on dark mode in Settings menu of Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can do the same in System Preferences on a Mac. Here's how to set up and customize the feature.
If you want dark mode on your Mac, all you have to do is open System Preferences > General and choose the Dark appearance. This will change the color of the OS settings menu, Dock, and menu bar at the top of the screen. If you're still using one of Apple's default wallpapers, it will also change the colors to a darker shade.
You can further customize the dark theme from this same menu by changing the accent color used for settings menus and supported apps. If you want windows that are distinctly black, uncheck Allow wallpaper tinting in windows.
Dark mode can also be quickly enabled from Control Center. Click the switch icon in the menu bar and click Display, then choose Dark Mode to switch the feature on and off.
If you only want dark mode at certain times of the day, head to System Preferences > General and instead choose Auto, which will alter the color theme of your desktop with the time of day. The OS will use light mode during daylight hours and then switch to dark mode after hours.
Some third-party apps will also support dark mode on your Mac, so changing the theme will also affects apps such as Chrome and Signal. Check any other programs you use to see if they have options to change the color theme.

Dark Mode, also known as Black Mode, Dark Theme, Light-On-Dark, or Night Mode is your device's interface setting that turns the default white background to black. The content color scheme is also changed from dark to light. You can use dark mode for your device or third-party apps as well.
